Si parte dalle porte di Lucca, dove l'aria porta ancora il ricordo del mare. La città rimane presto alle spalle mentre la strada comincia a salire — prima dolcemente, poi con decisione — verso l'Appennino Pistoiese. San Marcello Piteglio, le faggete, i tornanti che si avvitano tra le conifere: il motore respira aria fredda e il casco si riempie di profumo di resina.

Una pausa pranzo nel verde dell'Appennino segna la metà della giornata, prima di riprendere la strada verso est. Il crinale si attraversa in quota, il paesaggio si apre, e la discesa porta nel cuore del Mugello. Strade ampie, curve morbide, borghi di pietra immobili da secoli. La giornata si chiude a Castiglione dei Pepoli: cena, riposo, e la soddisfazione di aver già percorso la metà più selvaggia del tour.

We set off from the gates of Lucca, where the air still carries a hint of the sea. The city falls away quickly as the road begins to climb — gently at first, then with purpose — into the Pistoiese Apennines. San Marcello Piteglio, the beech forests, switchbacks spiralling up through the pines: the engine breathes cold mountain air and your helmet fills with the scent of resin.

A lunch break in the Apennine woodland marks the midpoint of the day before we head east along the ridge. The landscape opens wide and the descent carries us into the green heart of the Mugello — wide roads, gentle bends, stone villages unchanged for centuries. The day ends in Castiglione dei Pepoli: dinner, rest, and the satisfaction of having ridden the wildest half of the tour.

La domenica mattina si riparte con i passi. Prima il Passo della Raticosa — meta di pellegrinaggio per generazioni di motociclisti, una strada che sa di leggenda — poi il Passo della Futa a 903 metri, dove la strada scende decisa verso la Toscana. Ogni curva è un quadro diverso: boschi fitti, radure improvvise, scorci sulla pianura lontana.

Dopo una sosta per il pranzo tra i colli, il percorso risale il Pratomagno su asfalto perfetto fino ai 1.222 metri della cresta. Da lassù la Toscana si apre tutta — Arezzo a sud-est, il Chianti sull'orizzonte, Firenze che brilla nella valle. La discesa finale porta a Piazzale Michelangelo, dove il panorama su Firenze chiude il tour nel modo più bello possibile.

Sunday morning belongs to the passes. First the Passo della Raticosa — a pilgrimage destination for generations of motorcyclists, a road that feels like legend — then the Passo della Futa at 903 metres, where the road drops purposefully back into Tuscany. Every bend brings a different view: dense woodland, sudden clearings, distant glimpses of the plain.

After a lunch stop, the route climbs the Pratomagno massif all the way to 1,222 metres. From the crest, Tuscany spreads out — Arezzo to the south-east, the Chianti hills on the horizon, Florence shining in the valley. The final descent ends at Piazzale Michelangelo, where the panorama over Florence closes the tour in the most fitting way imaginable.
